Sometimes we ask ourselves the question, "what is God's will for me?"
God's will for us is linked to the study of God's Word, the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to study to show ourselves approved unto God; workmen and women that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (paraphrase). You will find that God's will is contained in His Word. I believe it is possible that every time you pray, you can be in God's will, if you have a correct understanding of His word.
An example of God's will is found in 1 John 3: 22-24 :
22 "And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
23 And this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ and love one another as He gave us commandment.
24 And He that keepeth His commandment, dwelleth in Him, and he, in Him. And hereby we know that He abideth in us by the Spirit which He hath given us."
So then, when we pray and ask God for strength and help in keeping His commandments, and believing on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, to help us love one another, then, we are praying in God's will.

In our recent Bible study, we were discussing how, in the Word, it says that David was a man after God's own heart. And for years, I've heard this. As it was pointed out, there always seemed to be some mystery or uniqueness surrounding this. Almost as if being a person after God's own heart was exclusive to David. But as we found in the Scriptures, it is possible for us to also be so designated, as men and women after God's own heart. If we look and see what David did, how he meditated on God's Word, how he loved God's laws and precepts...(Psalm 119 and many of the other chapters in the book of Psalm) how he did EVERYTHING with his WHOLE heart!
ReplyDeleteAs it says in Deuteronomy 6: 4-7
4"Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord:
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all soul, and with all thy might
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
The New Testament repeats this commandment in many places, as well. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-40 that we must love the Lord God with ALL our heart, with all our soul, and with our our mind - which is the first and great commandment, and the second is like it - that we must love our neighbors as we love ourselves. He also said that ALL the laws and the prophets hang on these two great commandments.
If we ask for the power of God's Spirit to help us to love with our WHOLE hearts this way (because it is only by God's power that we can possibly perform this), then we can be assured that we walk IN HIS WILL, because, as you have stated, knowing God's will is linked with studying and knowing God's Word. And, as we found out in our Bible study, we can also be people after God's own heart, just like David.
